Spiderweb Chocolate Pumpkin Pie is a festive Halloween dessert featuring a rich pumpkin chocolate filling encased in a flaky pie crust, topped with a decorative spiderweb design made from pie dough strips. This recipe combines the creamy texture of pumpkin pie with the indulgence of melted semi-sweet chocolate, finished with a touch of espresso powder and pumpkin pie spice for extra depth. Perfect for a spooky seasonal treat that serves 12.

Ingredients

Chocolate Pumpkin Filling

  • 1½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (or dark chocolate chips)
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 30 oz pumpkin pie filling (canned, not plain pumpkin puree)
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp espresso powder (optional)
  • ¼ tsp pumpkin pie spice (optional)

Pie Crust & Topping

  • 14.1 oz refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tbsp milk
  • 1 Tbsp orange sanding sugar (optional)
  • Plastic spiders (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Prep & Preheat: Remove pie crusts from refrigerator to allow them to come to room temperature. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C/Gas Mark 7).
  2. Prepare Pie Crust: Press one 14.1 oz refrigerated pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish, ensuring it fully covers the bottom and edges. Crimp the edges neatly to form a decorative border.
  3. Melt Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine 1½ cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips and ¼ cup butter. Microwave in 30-second bursts at 50% power, stirring after each burst until the mixture is melted and smooth.
  4. Mix Pumpkin Filling: In a large bowl, whisk together 30 oz pumpkin pie filling, 3 large eggs, 1 tsp vanilla extract, optional ½ tsp espresso powder, and optional ¼ tsp pumpkin pie spice. Incorporate the melted chocolate into this mixture until fully combined.
  5. Assemble Filling: Pour the chocolate pumpkin filling into the prepared pie crust, smoothing out the top evenly.
  6. Create Spiderweb Crust: Roll out the second pie crust and carefully cut it into ⅛-inch-wide strips. Lay 4 to 5 strips across the pie evenly to form spokes of a spiderweb (about 8-10 spokes in total). Connect the spokes by adding curved strips in concentric circles to create the web effect.
  7. Apply Egg Wash and Sugar: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 large egg and 1 Tbsp milk to make the egg wash. Brush this evenly over the spiderweb crust strips. Sprinkle 1 Tbsp orange sanding sugar over the egg-washed crust for a sparkling finish.
  8. Bake Pie: Place the pie in the preheated oven at 425°F (220°C/Gas Mark 7) and bake for 15 minutes. Then reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C/Gas Mark 4) and bake for an additional 40 to 45 minutes, or until the filling is mostly set but still has a slight wobble in the center. If the crust starts to overbrown, tent it loosely with foil.
  9. Cool and Decorate: Remove the pie from the oven and transfer it to a wire rack. Let it cool completely for about 2 hours to allow the filling to set properly. Once cooled, place plastic spiders decoratively on top of the spiderweb crust before serving.

Notes

  • Allow the eggs and pumpkin filling to come to room temperature to ensure a smooth filling.
  • The espresso powder enhances the chocolate flavor but can be omitted if desired.
  • Use refrigerated pie crusts for convenience, or homemade pie crust if preferred.
  • Keep an eye on the crust during baking to prevent burning; cover with foil if necessary.
  • Plastic spiders are for decoration only and should be removed before eating.
  • For a dairy-free option, substitute butter with a plant-based alternative and use a dairy-free pie crust.
