Crispy French baguette filled with spicy Italian sausage and melted pepper jack cheese, enhanced with a flavorful garlic herb butter, grilled to perfection for a deliciously savory stuffed bread.

Ingredients

Sausage and Cheese

  • 5 spicy Italian sausages
  • 1 lb block pepper jack cheese, cubed (½-inch cubes)
  • 1 French baguette

Garlic Herb Butter

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons chili flakes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Grill: Preheat your grill to 300°F to ensure a moderate and even heat that will cook the raw sausage thoroughly without burning the bread.
  2. Prepare Garlic Herb Butter: In a bowl, mix the softened unsalted butter with minced garlic, chopped fresh parsley, and chili flakes until the mixture is uniform and aromatic.
  3. Prepare the Baguette: Slice the French baguette lengthwise about three-quarters through. Carefully hollow out the interior, leaving approximately ½-inch thick walls without breaking the bread structure.
  4. Cut Cheese: Cut the pepper jack cheese into uniform ½-inch cubes to ensure even melting during cooking.
  5. Clean Bread Interior: Remove any remaining soft bread from the hollowed-out section, making sure the cavity is clean and the walls intact.
  6. Apply Garlic Butter: Generously brush the garlic herb butter on all interior surfaces of the baguette and lightly brush the exterior crust to impart flavor.
  7. Assemble Filling: Layer the cheese cubes first against the buttered interior surfaces. Then, place the raw sausage links on top of the cheese. Add extra cheese over the sausages if desired for extra cheesiness.
  8. Close the Baguette: Close the bread securely without wrapping in foil to allow direct contact with the grill grates.
  9. Initial Grilling: Place the baguette sausage-side down on the grill grates and cook for 20-25 minutes, or until the sausages brown properly.
  10. Flip and Finish Cooking: Flip the bread over and grill an additional 10-15 minutes to finish cooking the bottom crust and melt the cheese completely.
  11. Check Temperature and Rest: Verify that the sausage reaches an internal temperature of 160°F for safe consumption. Let the stuffed bread rest for 3-4 minutes before slicing.
  12. Serve: Slice and serve the sausage and cheese stuffed bread hot for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Ensure sausages are fully cooked before assembling for food safety.
  • Can be prepared ahead of time, assembled and refrigerated up to 24 hours before grilling.
  • Use a meat thermometer to confirm sausages reach 160°F internal temperature.
  • Adding extra cheese on top of the sausage creates a gooier melt.
  • Grill temperature should be moderate to avoid burning the bread while cooking the sausage.
