Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 7 cups Rice Krispies Cereal
  • 6 tablespoons salted butter
  • 16 ounces marshmallows
  • 6 ounces white candy melts or white chocolate chips (about 1 cup)
  • 3 ounces black candy melts

Optional Decorations

  • 4-6 ounces colored candy melts in a variety of colors
  • Royal icing for decorating sugar skull designs

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bowl: Grease a large mixing bowl thoroughly with butter or baking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Measure cereal: Pour the Rice Krispies Cereal into the greased bowl and set it aside for later use.
  3. Butter preparation: Cut the salted butter into small pieces for more even melting and place it into a medium-large saucepan.
  4. Heat butter: Set the pan over LOW heat to melt the butter gently without burning.
  5. Add marshmallows and white chocolate: Stir the marshmallows and white chocolate chips or candy melts into the melted butter.
  6. Partially melt mixture: Stir often while heating until approximately 75% of the marshmallows and white chocolate have melted to avoid overheating.
  7. Finish melting off heat: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir vigorously until the mixture is completely smooth and melted.
  8. Combine with cereal: Pour the melted marshmallow-white chocolate mixture over the Rice Krispies cereal and stir thoroughly until all cereal pieces are evenly coated.
  9. Cool mixture: Allow the coated cereal mixture to cool for a few minutes until it is safe and manageable to handle by hand.
  10. Prepare skull molds: Grease one skull cavity in a non-stick skull cakelet pan with butter to prevent sticking during molding.
  11. Form skull shapes: Pinch off a handful of the cooled cereal mixture and roll it loosely into an oval shape.
  12. Press mixture into pan: Firmly press the oval shape into the greased skull mold, flattening the top surface and trimming any excess mixture.
  13. Release skull shapes: Run a thin, plastic blender spatula or plastic knife around the edges of the skull to loosen it, then carefully lift the skull out of the mold.
  14. Apply black details: Melt black candy melts and use a piping bag or small tool to pipe into the eye sockets, nose, and teeth areas of each skull for contrast.
  15. Decorate the skulls: Use melted colored candy melts or royal icing to create intricate sugar skull designs. Apply colors by dabbing with a food-safe paintbrush or piping through pastry bags for precision.
  16. Set candy decorations: If using candy melts for decoration, place the skulls in the freezer for a few minutes until the candy hardens, then allow them to rest at room temperature for about 30 minutes before packaging.
  17. Set royal icing: If decorating with royal icing, allow the icing to dry completely, which may take overnight, before packaging to ensure firm decorations.

Notes

  • Use low heat throughout the melting process to prevent scorching the marshmallows and chocolate.
  • Greasing the bowl and molds is essential to ease mixing and releasing the skull shapes.
  • Handle the mixture once cooled slightly but while still pliable for best molding results.
  • Decorating with candy melts is quicker to set compared to royal icing which requires overnight drying.
  • Store finished treats in an airtight container to maintain freshness.
