These Meatball Subs with Frozen Meatballs are a quick and easy meal perfect for busy weeknights. Using thawed Italian-style frozen meatballs combined with savory marinara sauce and melted provolone or mozzarella cheese, these subs offer a comforting and hearty sandwich experience. Toasted hoagie rolls add the perfect crunch, while optional fresh herbs provide a flavorful finishing touch.

Ingredients

Meatballs and Sauce

  • 10 ounces Italian style frozen meatballs, thawed
  • 1 cup marinara sauce, plus extra for dipping

Cheese

  • ½ cup grated provolone or mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese

Bread

  • 4 hoagie rolls, split

Optional Garnish

  • Chopped fresh herbs such as parsley, basil, or oregano

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Toast the Rolls: Preheat your oven to 425°F. Allow the thawed meatballs to come to room temperature while the oven warms. Place the open hoagie rolls on a large rimmed baking sheet and toast them in the oven until lightly browned, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Meatballs and Sauce: In a large bowl, toss together the thawed meatballs and marinara sauce. If the meatballs are still cold or very large, warm them gently in a saucepan on the stovetop over low heat or in the microwave to heat through before assembling.
  3. Assemble the Subs: Spoon the sauced meatballs onto the bottom halves of the toasted hoagie rolls. Sprinkle grated provolone or mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese over the meatballs.
  4. Bake until Hot and Melted: Place the assembled subs back into the oven, uncovered, and bake for 3 to 5 minutes until the meatballs are heated through and the cheese has melted.
  5. Optional Broil for Crispiness: To achieve a more browned cheese topping and toastier rolls, place the subs under the broiler for about one minute, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  6. Serve: Close the subs and serve with additional marinara sauce on the side for dipping. Garnish with chopped fresh herbs if desired for added flavor and color.

Notes

  • Make sure meatballs are thawed to ensure even heating.
  • Warming the meatballs beforehand prevents cold spots inside the subs.
  • Use fresh herbs like parsley, basil, or oregano to enhance flavor.
  • Keep a close eye during broiling to prevent burning the cheese or bread.
  • Substitute cheese types based on preference or availability.
