These festive Jack-O’-Lantern Burgers are a fun twist on a classic American favorite. Juicy beef and sausage patties are seasoned with ranch dressing mix and topped with cheddar cheese cut into spooky jack-o’-lantern faces. Perfect for Halloween gatherings, these burgers are grilled to perfection and served on toasted buns for a delicious, eye-catching meal.

Ingredients

Meat Mixture

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • ½ lb beef sausage
  • 1 (1-oz) packet ranch dressing mix

Toppings & Serving

  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  1. Mix the Meat: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, beef sausage, and ranch dressing mix. Mix gently just until all ingredients are evenly incorporated to avoid overworking the meat.
  2. Shape Patties: Divide the meat mixture into four equal portions and shape each into a burger patty, about ¾-inch thick for even cooking.
  3. Cook Patties: Heat a cast iron grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each patty until the internal temperature reaches 160ºF, approximately 7 minutes, flipping halfway through. Alternatively, you may grill or broil the patties if preferred.
  4. Prepare Cheese Faces: While the burgers cook, use a small sharp knife to carefully cut jack-o’-lantern eyes, noses, and mouths into each slice of cheddar cheese to create festive faces.
  5. Add Cheese: Once the patties are cooked, place one cheese slice with the jack-o’-lantern design on top of each burger. Heat for about 1 minute, just until the cheese begins to soften but does not fully melt to preserve the face shape.
  6. Assemble Burgers: Toast the hamburger buns and assemble the burgers by placing each patty on a bun. Serve immediately with your favorite toppings and condiments.

Notes

  • Ground beef can be substituted entirely for the sausage, though the sausage adds extra flavor and juiciness.
  • Cheddar cheese is best for achieving the classic orange jack-o’-lantern look. American cheese is a suitable alternative.
  • Do not fully melt the cheese to prevent the jack-o’-lantern faces from losing their shape.
  • Burger patties and cheese faces can be prepared in advance and refrigerated until ready to cook.
