This flavorful American steak sandwich features tender, thinly sliced steak cooked to perfection with caramelized onions, fresh herb butter, and melted Havarti cheese on a crusty baguette. Perfectly broiled to melt the cheese, this hearty sandwich is ideal for a satisfying main course.

Ingredients

Herb Butter

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed

Steak Sandwich

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb steak
  • 1 tbsp salt, adjust to taste
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced into half rings
  • 4 slices Havarti cheese
  • 1 baguette, sliced lengthwise

Instructions

  1. Prepare Herb Butter: In a bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with crushed garlic cloves and diced fresh dill. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and uniform. Set this flavorful herb butter aside for later use.
  2. Slice the Steak: To make cutting easier, place the steak in the freezer for a few minutes to firm it up slightly. Then slice the steak into thin strips against the grain for tenderness.
  3. Cook the Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a skillet over high heat until hot. Add the sliced steak, season generously with salt, and cook until the beef turns golden brown but remains tender. Remove the cooked steak from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Sauté Onions: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and sauté over medium heat until they become golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Assemble Sandwich: Slice the baguette lengthwise and spread a generous layer of the prepared herb butter on both sides of the bread. Layer the cooked steak strips first, followed by the caramelized onions, and finally top with slices of Havarti cheese.
  6. Broil to Melt Cheese: Keep the sandwich open-faced and place it under a broiler for about 2 minutes, or until the Havarti cheese is bubbly and fully melted. Keep a close eye to avoid burning.
  7. Serve: Remove from the broiler and serve immediately while the sandwich is warm and the cheese is gooey for the best taste experience.

Notes

  • Freezing the steak briefly before slicing helps achieve thin, even slices for quick cooking.
  • Adjust the amount of salt on the steak according to your taste preference.
  • Use a broiler to melt the cheese quickly; if unavailable, a toaster oven with a broil function works well.
  • The herb butter can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days.
  • You can substitute Havarti with other melting cheeses like Swiss or provolone if preferred.
