Sweet and gooey Hawaiian Roll Cinnamon Rolls made with buttery brown sugar cinnamon filling and topped with smooth cream cheese icing. These sticky, soft cinnamon rolls are easy to prepare using Hawaiian rolls and baked to perfection for a delightful breakfast or dessert treat.

Ingredients

Rolls

  • 12 count Hawaiian Rolls (12 ounce package)
  • 10 tablespoons butter (divided)
  • ⅔ cup light brown sugar (packed)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Cream Cheese Icing

  • 4 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the rolls.
  2. Slice Rolls: Using a bread knife, carefully slice the Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally without separating individual rolls, resulting in a top half and a bottom half as separate whole pieces.
  3. Melt Butter in Baking Dish: Place 2 tablespoons of butter in a 9×13 inch baking dish and put it in the oven until the butter is fully melted.
  4. Arrange Bottom Rolls: Remove the baking dish from the oven and lay the bottom half of the Hawaiian rolls evenly in the dish.
  5. Prepare Brown Sugar Cinnamon Mixture: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt 8 tablespoons of butter in 30-second intervals until fully melted, then stir in the brown sugar and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  6. Spread Filling on Bottom Rolls: Spread half of the brown sugar cinnamon mixture evenly over the bottom half of the rolls in the baking dish.
  7. Layer Top Rolls: Place the top half of the rolls over the brown sugar cinnamon layer.
  8. Top with Remaining Filling: Pour the remaining brown sugar cinnamon mixture on top of the rolls, distributing it evenly over the surface.
  9. Bake Rolls: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake the cinnamon rolls for 15 minutes until hot and bubbly.
  10. Prepare Cream Cheese Icing: While the rolls bake, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a small microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals until melted. Then add room temperature cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and whole milk; whisk together until smooth and creamy.
  11. Cool Rolls: Remove the baked cinnamon rolls from the oven and allow them to sit for 10 minutes to cool slightly.
  12. Ice the Rolls: Pour the cream cheese icing evenly over the warm rolls and spread it out to cover the entire top.
  13. Serve: Slice the rolls and serve warm for a deliciously sweet and comforting treat.

Notes

  • For easier slicing, use a serrated bread knife to cut the rolls horizontally.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature for smooth, lump-free icing.
  • Letting the rolls cool slightly before icing prevents the icing from melting too much and becoming runny.
  • Use light brown sugar for a milder molasses flavor; dark brown sugar can be used for a richer taste.
  • Serve warm for best flavor and texture; leftovers can be reheated gently in the microwave.
