Delight in this easy homemade vanilla ice cream recipe that combines simple ingredients for a rich, creamy treat. Perfect for ice cream makers, this versatile base allows for custom add-ins and toppings to craft your ideal frozen dessert at home.

Ingredients

Ice Cream Base

  • 2 cups heavy cream (or regular cream)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ to ¾ cup sugar (start with ½ cup and adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Add-in options of your choice (e.g., chocolate chips, nuts, fruit pieces)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, whole milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until the sugar is completely dissolved, starting with ½ cup sugar and adding more if desired for sweetness.
  2. Churn the Ice Cream: Pour the mixture into your ice cream machine and process according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you want to include add-ins, stir them in during the last minute of churning or layer them into the container when transferring for freezing.
  3. Freeze to Firm Up: Once churning is complete and the ice cream reaches a soft-serve consistency, transfer it to an airtight freezer-safe container and freeze for at least a couple of hours to firm up properly.
  4. Soften Before Serving: If frozen for an extended period, like overnight, allow the ice cream to sit at room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes to soften to an ideal scooping texture before serving.

Notes

  • You can adjust the sugar amount to your preference, starting with ½ cup and adding up to ¾ cup.
  • Add-ins can be mixed in during the last minute of churning or folded in when transferring to the container for more texture layering.
  • Using an airtight container helps prevent ice crystals from forming during freezing.
  • If you don’t have an ice cream maker, you can try freezing the mixture and stirring every 30 minutes until firm for a no-churn alternative.
