These Crustless Apple Pies offer a delightful twist on a classic dessert by using whole apple halves, thinly sliced without cutting through the bottom, creating a beautiful fan effect. Baked with a buttery oat topping and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar, they are served warm with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel for an irresistible finish.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 3 large baking apples, halved vertically and cored

Butter and Sugar

  • 6 tablespoons melted butter, divided
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar, plus more for sprinkling

Spices and Oats

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

To Serve

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Warm caramel sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Slice Apples: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place each apple half flat side down and use a paring knife to create thin slices across the apple, stopping just before the bottom so that the slices remain connected, forming a fan-like shape. Transfer the prepared apple halves onto the baking sheet.
  2. Butter and Sugar Topping: Lightly brush the tops of each apple half with 2 tablespoons of melted butter, then sprinkle sugar generously over the surface for a sweet crust.
  3. Bake Apples: Place the apples in the oven and bake until they become soft and caramelized, about 25 minutes. This step softens the fruit and enhances the natural sweetness.
  4. Prepare Oat Topping: While the apples cool slightly, mix the remaining 4 tablespoons of melted butter with the remaining sugar, ground cinnamon, and rolled oats in a small bowl. This mixture will add a crunchy, flavorful contrast to the soft apples.
  5. Fill Apple Slits and Bake Again: Once the apples have cooled enough to handle safely, gently spoon the oat mixture into the slits between the apple slices. Return the apples to the oven and bake for an additional 10 minutes to toast the oat topping.
  6. Serve with Ice Cream and Caramel: Remove the apples from the oven and top each with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Drizzle warm caramel sauce over the top for a luscious dessert experience.

Notes

  • Use firm baking apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji for best results.
  • Adjust sugar amounts based on apple sweetness and personal preference.
  • The oat topping can be customized with chopped nuts for extra texture.
  • Serve immediately for best taste, as the topping softens if left too long.
  • Can be made ahead to the oat topping step and baked fresh before serving.
