Ingredients

For the Beef Patties

  • pounds lean ground beef (90/10)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For the French Onion Gravy

  • 10.5 ounce can French onion soup
  • 1 ounce packet French onion soup mix
  • 1 cup unsalted beef broth
  • 1 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 Tablespoons water

For Topping

  • 4 slices provolone cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Beef Mixture: In a large bowl, combine 1½ pounds lean ground beef, 1 teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ cup breadcrumbs, 1 large egg, and 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined to avoid overworking the meat and maintain tenderness.
  2. Form Patties: Shape the beef mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties, ensuring they are evenly sized for uniform cooking.
  3. Place Patties in Slow Cooker: Transfer the patties into a 4-6 quart oval slow cooker, spacing them evenly for proper heat circulation.
  4. Add Soup and Broth: Pour one 10.5 ounce can of French onion soup over the patties and evenly sprinkle 1 ounce packet French onion soup mix on top. Add 1 cup unsalted beef broth to enhance the gravy’s richness.
  5. Slow Cook the Patties: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 5 to 6 hours, until the patties are tender and infused with the savory onion gravy flavors.
  6. Thicken the Gravy: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 Tablespoon cornstarch and 2 Tablespoons water to form a slurry. Stir this mixture into the slow cooker and continue cooking for an additional 10 to 15 minutes until the gravy thickens to your liking.
  7. Add Cheese and Melt: Place 4 slices of provolone cheese on top of the patties. Cover the slow cooker and let sit for 5 minutes to allow the cheese to melt perfectly over the hot patties.
  8. Serve: Carefully remove the patties with gravy and melted cheese and serve hot with your favorite sides.

Notes

  • Using lean ground beef (90/10) helps reduce excess fat but keeps the patties juicy.
  • Adjust salt to taste, especially if you are mindful of sodium intake from the soup mixes.
  • Do not overmix the meat when combining ingredients to keep patties tender.
  • You can substitute provolone cheese with Swiss or mozzarella if preferred.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your slow cooker model.
