A classic, make-ahead cranberry sauce recipe perfect for Thanksgiving dinner. This simple cranberry sauce is made with fresh cranberries, sugar, and water, with optional mix-ins like pecans, orange zest, and warm spices to enhance its flavor. It’s easy to prepare on the stovetop and can be customized to suit your taste preferences.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 cup (200g) sugar
  • 1 cup (250ml) water
  • 4 cups (one 12-ounce package) fresh or frozen cranberries

Optional Mix-ins

  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • Pinch or two of orange zest
  • Raisins
  • Currants
  • Blueberries
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Allspice

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cranberries: Place the cranberries in a colander and rinse them under cold water. Pick out and discard any damaged or bruised cranberries to ensure a clean, fresh sauce.
  2. Boil the water with sugar: In a medium saucepan, combine the water and sugar. Place over high heat and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to fully dissolve the sugar.
  3. Add the cranberries, cook until they burst: Add the rinsed cranberries to the boiling sugar water. Return to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes or until most cranberries have burst, releasing their natural juices and thickening the sauce.
  4. Stir in the mix-ins, if using: Once the cranberries have burst, you can keep the sauce plain or add optional ingredients like chopped pecans and orange zest for extra flavor. You may also add raisins, currants, blueberries, or warm spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice. Start with a pinch of spices and adjust to taste.
  5. Cool: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the cranberry sauce to cool completely at room temperature. Then transfer it to a bowl and refrigerate. Note that the sauce will continue to thicken as it chills.
  6. Enjoy! Serve the cranberry sauce chilled as a vibrant and tangy accompaniment to your holiday meal.

Notes

  • Substitute 1/2 cup of water with 1/2 cup of orange juice to enhance the orange flavor in the sauce.
  • You can reduce the sugar amount if you prefer a less sweet sauce; start with half the sugar and adjust according to your taste.
  • If you reduce the sugar, consider reducing the water slightly to keep the sauce thick.
  • The cranberry sauce thickens further as it cools, so don’t worry if it seems a bit thin while still warm.
