These wholesome Carrot Dog Treats are a healthy, homemade snack packed with shredded carrots, creamy peanut butter, and whole wheat flour. Perfectly baked to a golden brown, they offer a firm yet tender texture that dogs will love. With natural ingredients and no artificial additives, these treats make a great choice for rewarding your furry friend.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour (divide 1 ¾ cups for dough, ¼ cup for dusting work surface)
  • 2½ teaspoons baking powder

Wet Ingredients

  • 1½ cups carrots, washed, dried and finely shredded (do not peel)
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • ¼ cup water (plus extra if needed)
  • 2 extra large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare baking sheets: Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 ¾ cups of whole wheat flour and 2½ teaspoons of baking powder until thoroughly combined.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: In another medium mixing bowl, add the shredded carrots, creamy peanut butter, water, eggs, and honey. Stir well until the mixture is fully combined and uniform in texture.
  4. Incorporate flour mixture: Gradually add the dry flour mixture into the wet ingredients, stirring just until well incorporated. The dough should become firm but not dry; add a few more tablespoons of water if needed to achieve the right consistency.
  5. Prepare work surface: Dust your workspace and rolling pin with the reserved ¼ cup of whole wheat flour to prevent sticking while rolling out the dough.
  6. Roll out the dough: Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to approximately ¼ inch thickness, ensuring an even surface.
  7. Cut out shapes: Use a 3-inch dog bone shaped cookie cutter to cut the dough into treats. Place the cutouts evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake the treats: Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the edges are set and have turned a golden brown color.
  9. Cool the treats: Transfer the baked dog treats onto a cooling rack and allow them to cool completely before serving or storing.

Notes

  • Do not peel the carrots to preserve nutrients and texture.
  • If dough is too dry, add water a tablespoon at a time until it reaches a firm but pliable consistency.
  • Store cooled treats in an airtight container for up to two weeks or freeze for longer storage.
  • Make sure to use creamy peanut butter without xylitol, as it is toxic to dogs.
  • This recipe yields about 60 small dog treats, perfect for medium to small sized dogs.
