Indulge in these decadent Brown Butter Dulce de Leche Rice Krispie Treats that combine the nutty richness of browned butter with creamy dulce de leche layered between cinnamon sugar Rice Krispies. Soft, gooey marshmallows meld with crunchy cereal to create a delightful twist on a classic treat, perfect for dessert or snack time.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 5 Tablespoons Butter
  • ¼ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 10 Cups Mini Marshmallows (divided)
  • 6 Cups Rice Krispies Cereal (cinnamon sugar flavored, see notes)
  • ½ teaspoon Sea Salt (fine grain)
  • ½ Can Dulce de Leche (approximately 7 ounces)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan: Spray a 9×9-inch baking pan with non-stick spray, then line it with a foil or parchment paper sling. Spray the lining again to ensure easy removal later.
  2. Brown the Butter: Place a large pot on the stove over medium heat. Add the butter and allow it to melt, stirring occasionally until it turns golden brown and emits a nutty aroma. Be careful not to burn the butter.
  3. Melt the Marshmallows: Remove the pot from the heat and immediately add the sea salt and 8 cups of mini marshmallows. Stir continuously until the marshmallows have completely melted into a smooth, thick mixture. If needed, return briefly to low heat to assist melting, but avoid burning.
  4. Add Vanilla Extract: Once smooth, stir in the vanilla extract evenly throughout the melted marshmallow and butter mixture.
  5. Combine with Cereal: Measure the cinnamon sugar-flavored Rice Krispies into a large bowl. Pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the cereal and mix thoroughly until all the cereal is coated.
  6. Mix in Remaining Marshmallows: While still warm, fold in the remaining 2 cups of mini marshmallows to add extra texture and gooeyness.
  7. Layer the Treats: Press about half of the rice krispie mixture firmly and evenly into the prepared pan to form the base layer.
  8. Add Dulce de Leche: Spread the dulce de leche evenly over the base layer in a smooth, consistent layer to create a rich, sweet middle.
  9. Top Layer: Add the remaining rice krispies mixture on top of the dulce de leche layer. Lightly press it down evenly to seal the layers together. Allow the entire treat to set at room temperature until fully cooled and firm.

Notes

  • For browning butter, melt the butter over medium heat and watch closely. It will foam and then begin to brown, releasing a nutty aroma. Remove from heat as soon as it reaches a golden brown color to prevent burning.
  • To make cinnamon sugar Rice Krispies, lightly toss the plain cereal with cinnamon and sugar to taste before mixing with marshmallows.
  • The foil or parchment paper sling helps lift the treats out of the pan easily for cutting and serving.
  • Pressing the layers firmly helps the treats hold their shape.
