Ingredients

Ground Beef Mixture

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (85/15)
  • 1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup hamburger pickles, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon coarse ground pepper
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

McDonald’s Secret Sauce Recipe

  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup French dressing
  • 2 tablespoons sweet relish
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

To Assemble (Double Decker)

  • 8 sesame seed hamburger buns
  • 2 cups iceberg lettuce, shredded
  • 12 hamburger pickle chips
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • Additional secret sauce, optional

Instructions

  1. Brown the Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it is halfway browned.
  2. Add Onions and Seasoning: Add the finely chopped yellow onion, kosher salt, coarse ground pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to the skillet with the beef. Continue cooking and stirring until the beef is fully browned, about another 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add Pickles: Stir in the chopped hamburger pickles to the cooked beef mixture and combine well.
  4. Make the Big Mac Sauce: In a medium bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, French dressing, sweet relish, ketchup, white vinegar, onion powder, and salt until well combined to make the McDonald’s copycat secret sauce.
  5. Combine Sauce with Beef: Pour 1 cup of the secret sauce into the skillet with the beef mixture. Stir it in and cook for an additional 1 minute to heat through and meld the flavors. Reserve the remaining sauce for assembling the sandwiches.
  6. Assemble the Sloppy Joes: To build the double-decker sandwiches, layer from the bottom up as follows: bottom bun, secret sauce, shredded lettuce, slice of American cheese, beef mixture, second bottom bun, secret sauce, shredded lettuce, pickle chips, beef mixture, and top bun.

Notes

  • Make sure to finely chop the onion to ensure it cooks through and blends well with the beef.
  • Adjust the seasoning to taste, especially salt and pepper, before serving.
  • You can toast the buns lightly in a pan or oven for added texture.
  • Feel free to double the secret sauce recipe if you like extra sauce on your sandwiches.
  • Leftover sauce keeps well refrigerated for up to a week and is great on other burgers or sandwiches.
