This BBQ Beef Sloppy Joes recipe combines the classic sloppy joe flavors with a tangy, smoky BBQ ketchup sauce for a delicious twist. Perfect for a quick and satisfying dinner, these sloppy joes come together in just 30 minutes and are served on toasted brioche buns with melted cheddar cheese for an irresistible meal.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef (85/15)
  • 1 yellow onion, diced

Sauce and Seasonings

  • 14.5 ounces diced tomatoes, canned, drained
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Serving

  • 6 brioche buns, toasted
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded

Instructions

  1. Cook the Beef and Onion: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and diced onions. Cook for 5-6 minutes, breaking up the beef but leaving some chunks intact, until the beef is browned and the onions are softened.
  2. Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in the drained diced tomatoes, beef broth, ketchup, barbecue sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Continue cooking over medium heat, allowing the sauce to reduce and thicken for about 5-6 minutes until the mixture becomes sticky and sloppy.
  3. Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Spoon the beef mixture generously onto the toasted brioche buns. Top each sandwich with shredded cheddar cheese for a melty, creamy finish. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper or hot sauce while cooking.
  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease, or substitute ground turkey for a lighter version.
  • Toast brioche buns to add extra texture and prevent sogginess.
  • Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
  • Optional toppings like pickles or sliced jalapeños add extra flavor and crunch.
