A delicious and hearty Meatball Sub recipe that features a flavorful homemade tomato sauce, juicy meatballs, and gooey melted cheese, all served in a toasted sub roll. Perfect for a family dinner or game day gathering.

Ingredients

Sauce:

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, smashed and finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Better than Bouillon Beef Base
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce

Meatballs and Assembly:

  • 32 ounces frozen meatballs or Homemade Meatballs
  • 16 ounces mozzarella or Provolone cheese
  • 12 French Rolls sandwich buns

Instructions

  1. Make the sauce: Chop onion, saute with oil. Add garlic and spices, then tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and tomato sauce. Cook on stovetop or in a slow cooker.
  2. Prep Sandwiches: Toast buns, add cheese, then meatballs and sauce. Serve buffet style or family style.
  3. Storage: Store meatballs and sauce in the refrigerator. Freeze leftovers for future use.
