A classic Patty Melt Sandwich featuring juicy ground beef patties, sweet caramelized onions, melted Swiss cheese, and crispy buttered sourdough or rye bread grilled to perfection. This comforting sandwich combines savory, sweet, and cheesy flavors for a satisfying meal any time of day.

Ingredients

Burger Patties

  • ½ lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Onions

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter

Sandwich

  • 4 slices sturdy bread (sourdough or rye)
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or provolone)
  • Butter, softened (for grilling)

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Melt butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and cook slowly for 8–10 minutes until they become soft, golden, and sweet. Once caramelized, remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside.
  2. Cook the patties: Form the ground beef into two thin patties, slightly larger than your bread slices. Season both sides generously with salt and black pepper. Using the same skillet, cook the patties over medium heat for 2–3 minutes on each side until cooked through. Remove the patties and set aside.
  3. Assemble the sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place two slices butter-side down on a clean surface. Add a slice of Swiss cheese on each, followed by a beef patty, a generous portion of caramelized onions, and then another slice of cheese. Top with the remaining bread slices, butter-side up.
  4. Grill: Return the assembled sandwiches to the skillet over medium-low heat. Cook for 3–4 minutes per side until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is melted. Use a spatula to press gently on the sandwiches for even browning and melting.
  5. Serve: Let the sandwiches rest for 1 minute after removing from heat. Slice each sandwich in half diagonally and plate for serving.

Notes

  • Using 80/20 ground beef ensures juicy and flavorful patties.
  • For best results, use sturdy bread like sourdough or rye that can hold up to grilling and fillings.
  • You can substitute Swiss cheese with provolone for a slightly different flavor.
  • Ensure the skillet is at medium-low heat while grilling to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts.
  • Butter the bread just before assembling to prevent sogginess.
