These maple cookies with maple icing are a delightful treat that perfectly balances the warm sweetness of maple with a hint of cinnamon. The soft, chewy cookies topped with a rich brown butter icing will quickly become a favorite in your baking repertoire.

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup pure maple syrup (Grade A for best flavor)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Brown Butter Icing:

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 12 tbsp milk
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon (optional)

Garnish:

  • Flaky sea salt or chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cookie Dough: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. In another bowl, cream butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Chill the Dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
  3. Bake the Cookies: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out the chilled dough and cut out shapes. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Let cool.
  4. Make the Brown Butter Icing: In a saucepan, brown the butter. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, maple syrup, milk, and cinnamon until smooth.
  5. Ice the Cookies: Spread the icing on the cooled cookies and garnish with flaky sea salt or chopped pecans.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use Grade A pure maple syrup.
  • Adjust the icing consistency by adding more milk for a thinner icing or more powdered sugar for a thicker icing.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
