Ingredients

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Wet Ingredients:

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ½ cup light brown sugar, packed
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon hot water
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Mix-Ins:

  • 1 ¼ cups chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone liner.
  2. Mix the ingredients: In a large bowl, cream together butter, brown sugar, and white sugar. Add the egg and vanilla; mix until combined. In a small bowl, dissolve baking soda in hot water, then add to the batter along with salt and flour. Stir until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips.
  3. Bake: Drop spoonfuls of batter onto baking sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are barely golden brown. Cool on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • If you like crunch, add ½ cup of walnuts or pecans.
  • For chewier cookies, mix in ½ cup of oatmeal.
  • Swap chocolate chips for chocolate chunks if desired.
  • Remove cookies when edges are barely golden to avoid over-baking.
  • Ensure baking soda is fully dissolved in hot water before adding to batter.
  • You can mix the batter by hand if you prefer not to use a mixer.
